Enhancing day opportunities for older people with a learning disability

Project Background

This is a collaborative Facilitator project, co-funded by IMPACT and Sunnyside Rural Trust. Sunnyside is a Hertfordshire charity and social enterprise providing day opportunities, training and work experience for people with learning disabilities, with a strong focus on meaningful occupation, developing skills, productivity and independence. As individuals with a learning disability supported by Sunnyside grow older, changes are becoming more apparent in their health and support needs including the onset of dementia at a younger age. This creates a practical challenge of how far their existing day opportunities model is appropriate for this ageing population. The Facilitator project is supporting Sunnyside to implement evidence-based and practical changes to their existing day opportunities model and to understand what helps or hinders those changes in practice.

Marlene Kelly

My name is Marlene Kelly and I am based in London. This is my fourth IMPACT Facilitator project; having previously looked at recruiting men into social care, housing models for people with a learning disability and on Carents. I have a background in social care practice and continue to work as a Director for a care home company.
