Reducing violence, discrimination and abuse experienced by social care staff

Project Background

Staff who deliver care and support to adults can be the victims of violence, discrimination and abuse. East Sussex County Council are working with IMPACT to explore issues that staff in provider services, and PAs, are facing, and how these can be addressed and managed appropriately.

The Strategic Coaches from IMPACT, Madalene Harmer and Megan James, have been meeting with Personal Assistants and Home Care Staff across the region to understand how these two groups of staff can be supported to manage these challenging situations, and what employers can do to address violence, discrimination and abuse towards their staff.

Over the past six months the Coaches have been working on a range of strands to the project including:

  • Tailoring a PA support webpage full of detailed information on services and signposting
  • Commissioning a bespoke training package to support PAs and ensuring that the training is self-sustaining with PAs taking ownership
  • Curating bespoke online training and support for Home Care providers and their staff

I joined IMPACT because I am really passionate about working to protect social care staff, having previous experience in this area. I also believe in building an evidence base and creating staff support networks – something I am looking forward to putting into practice on this project. I have worked across the charity, private and public sector, and have a MSc in Public Health.
